Subject: [MK] Entrelac

Here's the Entrelac pattern I said I would post to the list. It isn't the original, but a whole lot clearer and easier to follow.

Basketweave (Entrelac)

by JoAn Smith

Materials: Standard or Bulky machine, transfer tool, any weight yarn, waste yarn

Gauge: The best way to figure gauge is to make a block with at least four blocks in the second row. This means 6 base triangles, and do at least 4 or 5 rows of blocks, repeating rows 2 & 3 once or twice. This makes a good practice and learning block while serving as a gauge.

Row 1: BASE TRIANGLES, with blocks of 10 sts:

Carriage on left, with base color, e-wrap cast on 2 sts on ndls 4 & 5 on right of center,

K 2 rows.

*E-wrap 1 ndl on left, k 2 r*.

Repeat *-* for number of base triangles needed, 6 for this sample.

Use small claw weights, one at base and one on e-wraps, moving it up every 2 rows.

If you are changing color, break yarn now, if not continue with same color.

Row 2: FIRST END TRIANGLE:

*COL. With wrong side facing, pick up last 2 sts from left side of last triangle knitted,

hang on ndls #4 & 5 on right of center,

K 2 R.

*E-wrap 1 st to left and also pick up 1 st from triangle on right and hang on #5 ndl.

K 2 R.*

Repeat *-* until all sts from triangle have been picked up.

K 1 R, COR. Do not break yarn. Scrap off.

BLOCKS:

**With wrong side facing, pick up 10 edge loops across side of next base triangle,
hang on ndls 5-0-5.

K 2 R.
*Pick up 1st st at left edge of triangle and hang on ndl #5 at right side.

K 2 R.* Repeat *-* until all sts from triangles have been picked up.

K 1 R. COR Scrap off.**

END TRIANGLE:

*COL. With wrong side facing, pick up 10 edge loops from last triangle,
hang on ndls 5-0-5

K 2 R. Dec 1 st at right (pick up st on #5 and move to #4),
K 2 R. until 1 st remains, K 1 R,
break yarn and fasten off.*

Row 3: ALL BLOCKS:

**COR. With wrong side facing, pick up 10 edge loops from last triangle of row 2
and hang on 5-0-5 ndls.

K 2 R. *Pick up st on right edge of last block,
hang on ndl #5 on left,

K 2 R.* Repeat *-* until all sts from block have been used,
K 1 R. COL, scrap off.** Repeat until 6 blocks have been finished,
break yarn.

TOP ROW FINISH TRIANGLES:

*COR. With wrong side facing, pick up 10 edge loops from side of last triangle,
hang on 5-0-5 ndls.
K 2 R. Pick up 1 st from block on left and hang on #5 ndl on left,
dec 1 st on right side.
K 2 R.
Work this way until 1 st remains. Hang this st on ndl #5 on right and pick up 10 loops from side of next block (2 sts on #5 ndl),
continue till all blocks are worked off.

This is really a basic pattern, and if you start it, you usually modify it somewhere. You can put triangles and blocks in hold instead of scrapping off, but this usually brings on more problems of dropping sts, etc. It isn't fast, plan on plenty of time.

The coat I made took over a week to do, mostly because I had workers in the house, and the blocks were big, so by the time you did a few rows, it was quitting time. Have fun, and try doing designs in the blocks, even more time consuming!! JoAn Smith
